SOGOD, Southern Leyte, June 11 (PIA) -- A total of 10 barangays throughout the province were recognized by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO) as Solid Waste Management (SWM) Champions during the Environment Summit 2019 held recently at the Southern Leyte State University Campus in this town.
The SWM champions ranked 1 to 10 were: Bahay in Lilioan town; Buenavista, Pintuyan; Pinascohan in Maasin City; Mohon, Macrohon; Magbagacay, St. Bernard; San Jose in Sogod; San Vicente in Malitbog; Punong in Tomas Oppus; Lungsodaan in Padre Burgos; and Brgy. San Antonio in San Ricardo.
PENRM officer, Dr. Eva Abad said winners were judged according to proper solid waste management implementation at the barangay, their roles and responsibilities as barangay constituents, including their efforts of promoting recycling and how to minimize their wastes.
PENRMO also identified the SWM High Achiever Award municipalities -- St. Bernard, Liloan and Macrohon.
"High Achiever Award for SWM were judged based on the following: presence of budget; functional SWM Board; full-fledged Municipal ENR Officer; full closure of open dumpsite or 90 percent of it; presence of sanitary landfill or the implementation of waste processing ; and ongoing advocacies on SWM," she said.
The awardees were accorded with a plaques and cash prizes during the awarding ceremony.
The summit, which carries the theme "Protect our Species," also honored the winners of best recycled product, poster-slogan contest and Huni sa Kinaiyahan (song writing) contest, she said. (LDL/RGC/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
