ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept 22 (PIA) - Over Php6.5-million worth of rice crops and seaweeds were damaged due to the continues rainfall brought by low pressure area in Zamboanga City from September 13 to 15, 2020, reported City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez.
Sanchez added that a total of 143.4 hectares of rice fields and seaweed farms have been adversely affected, as well as 91 farmers. The total amount of damages is at Php6,515,039.
A total of 143.3 hectares of the total agricultural land affected are rice fields while.2 hectares are seaweed farms. Hardest hit was in Barangay Culianan area where 95.5 hectares of rice fields were ruined. The estimated value of damage reaches P4,638,375.
Sanchez said the city government as well as the national government will provide necessary assistance to the affected farmers the soonest.
Mayor Beng Climaco said the city government will give all necessary assistance to the affected farmers and households. Aside from the relief goods they also provided farm implements to support the farmers after the disaster.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture (DA) evaluated the areas affected and will give support as additional assistance for the agricultural sector.
Moreover, the continuous rainfall also damaged houses in some parts of the city which also forced residents to evacuate their homes. City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) have initially recorded 188 damaged houses due to rains and strong winds.
CSWDO head Socorro Rojas said affected families have been moved to temporary evacuation centers in their respective barangays while others stayed with their relatives. Recently, the affected families are already back home and initial relief assistance was extended. (NBE:MLE/ PIA9-Zamboanga City)
